Projection

The vector projection of MATH onto MATH is obtained by dropping a perpendicular from the point $P$ to the line through the origin $O$ and the point $Q$. The result is the vector MATHhaving magnitude MATH and direction the same as or opposite from $\QTR{bf}{v}$, depending on whether the scalar MATH is positive or negative.

The scalar projection of $u$ onto $\QTR{bf}{v}$ is the scalar MATHobtained by dropping a perpendicular from $\QTR{bf}{u}$ onto $\QTR{bf}{v}$. The scalar MATH is the magnitude of the projection of $\QTR{bf}{u}$ onto $\QTR{bf}{v}$.
