Let f(x,y) be a function of two variables.

The partial derivative of f with respect to x isMATHThe partial derivative of f with respect to y isMATH

In computing Dx f(x,y), the variable y is treated as a constant so that f(x,y) is considered as a function of x alone. The limitMATHis simply the derivative of that function.
