Increasing and decreasing functions

A function f is increasing if f(a) <  f(b)  whenever  a < b.  A function f is decreasing if f(a) >  f(b)  whenever a < b.

Increasing functions and decreasing functions  are called monotone functions.

The graph of an increasing function goes up as you go from left to right. The graph of a decreasing function goes down as you go from left to right.
