CALCULUS Understanding Its Concepts and Methods

Increasing and decreasing functions

A function *f* is increasing
if *f*(*a*) < *f*(*b*) whenever * a * < *
b*. A function *f* is decreasing if *f*(*a*)
> *f*(*b*) whenever *a * < * b*.

Increasing functions and decreasing functions are called monotone functions.

The graph of an increasing function goes up as you go from left to right. The graph of a decreasing function goes down as you go from left to right.
