A function f is a rule that assigns to each element x of a set an element f(x) of a second set.
The first set is the domain of f.
The element f(x) is the value of f at x.
A function of two variables is a rule f that assigns to each pair (x,y) in a set of pairs an element f(x,y).
The set of pairs is the domain of f.
The element f(x,y) is the value of f at (x,y).
